A few days before Christmas Day 1993 I quickly and painstakingly painted the first original of this painting. Living on a somewhat limited income but more concerned about presenting a meaningful gift I gladly gave this gift to my husband. This painting originated from my very first original painting.
The first building of Unalakleet's Evangelical Covenant Church was built in 1906. It was nostalgia and a longing for a simpler life that attracted me to this design and composition. I imagined the people milling and just inspired by an encouraging sermon or heard beautiful singing of a translated Eskimo song(s).
Of all my first paintings I treasure this one the most. I enjoyed painting the gesture of the little girl in the green parka. The joy of her gesture reflect my own joy in painting. Some people have observed the happiness and joy in my paintings.
